Strathmore University hosted the Future Leaders Challenge Eastern Africa 2026 this week — and the campus spent three days on one question: how to build inclusive pathways for young people, especially women and persons with disabilities, into skills, jobs and entrepreneurship in hospitality and tourism.

Thirty institutions from 12 countries took part, according to Eye Radio's report of the challenge: Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mauritius, Rwanda, Seychelles, Somalia, South Sudan, Madagascar, Tanzania and Uganda. Egerton University's own notice board confirms the dates as 25–27 October and names its four fourth-year BSc Ecotourism and Hospitality Management students: Elizabeth Mwikali Daniel, Salimu Akiba Ropia, Terian Ndanu Mwenga and Hamisi Alfan Mwavumo. Egerton's Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. George Muthaa, joined the delegation, and the team was led by lecturers under Barnabas Rotich, coordinated by Dr Maurice Ogoma, with oversight from Dean Dr Bernard Kirui.

The format, as reported, was nine to ten weeks of preparation, then student presentations before a business jury, workshops, property visits, a Job Market Fair and recruitment fair, and a School Directors Alliance Summit. The challenge's patron is Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano. The winning team was to be announced at a Celebration Dinner on 26 October.

That winner has not been verified. A Citizen Digital article about a USIU-Africa first place refers to the inaugural edition, held on 28–29 April in an undated year — it must not be confused with this October 2026 edition.

Strathmore's week did not stop there. The university's news listings record a Google-backed initiative on shaping Africa's AI future, published 27 October; a solar-power community project through its Strathmore Energy Research Centre, 26–27 October; and an account of the BA@10 Sudan simulation showdown, 26 October — but the full text of those items was not opened, so no detail beyond their titles and dates is stated here.

On the academic calendar, Strathmore's published calendar shows Staff Recognition Awards on 30 October, and Research and Innovation Week / Ideas Festival coming on 9–13 November. One stream of students is in examinations running to 3 November; another stream's classes end 25 November, with examinations 2–15 December. No Strathmore event was scheduled for 31 October itself, and no Strathmore-specific resumption memo was found — the national strike deal applies, and students should check the university's own notices for any revised timetable.

What we could not verify: the winning team or outcome of the October 2026 Future Leaders Challenge; any Strathmore-specific resumption notice or revised timetable dated 29–31 October; the detail of the Google-backed AI initiative, the solar project or the Sudan simulation beyond their listing titles and dates; any Strathmore event, incident or graduation news dated 31 October.
