Whitney Kibara did not have a long, hard campaign — by her own account, she barely had a campaign at all. She campaigned for two days. She still won a seat in the 22nd Congress of the Kenyatta University Students Association (KUSA), as Congressperson for City Campus.
The interview happened over a quick meal at BSSC Restaurant, where Kibara joined the Campus Pulse table ahead of the Congress's stay at a beach hotel on the North Coast. The meal was starch, protein and vegetables, with a citrus soda each, and the conversation ended with the meal.
"I can't say the campaigns was really, really hard for me because I already had like clarity of thought, so it was very easy to articulate that to the Master's students, PhD students, and the TVET students I serve at the City Campus," Kibara told Campus Pulse in an interview ahead of the Congress's trip to the Coast.
What she says she will miss most about the campaign is not the rallies or the votes. It is her camera.
"I will definitely miss my camera, because I obviously love documenting everything that we are doing. Storytelling is the ultimate form of education," she said.
The Coast trip is the Congress's first big gathering since the elections. Kibara puts the travelling number at 79: "We are 79 of us, the 22nd Congress." They are travelling, she said, with Dr. Masika, the Director of Student Affairs (DSA), and members of faculty are also expected to attend — though Kibara said she was not sure who they were and would meet them on the ground.
One meeting she has heard about, but has not confirmed, is with visitors from outside the university. "I have heard speculation that the executive team of Reformation Africa are in the country and they wanted to meet the leadership," she said. "So, hope — that's one of the people I'll be meeting. For the rest of the people, I think it's a surprise."
No hotel name, dates or programme for the Coast trip were stated in the interview, and none is stated here beyond the North Coast beach-hotel stay described above. The trip is reported here as Kibara described it: 79 members of the 22nd Congress, headed to the Coast, with the DSA and faculty, for the next few days.
Kibara also ran for an office inside Congress itself — Clerk. She did not win it; the Clerk is Edwin Auka, named in Speaker Reuben Ombura's statement alongside Deputy Speaker Alice Mwongeli. But Kibara credits the Student Governing Council with her Congress seat: "I can say for a fact that the SGC really supported me. I can attribute most of my votes to them, and the rest to the City Campus colleagues."
Asked who she is most excited to sit next to, she did not hesitate: the President. "I am very excited about sitting next to the President," she said. Kibara is a film producer, and she has a working reason for wanting that seat: "I'm hoping that I can be able to discuss business and the affairs of actually documenting the year, the academic year of 2026–2027. It's also a national year. It's going to be interesting, so it's also a plus for my production portfolio."
Her warmest words in the interview are for someone else entirely: Alice Mwongeli, now Deputy Speaker of the 22nd Congress. "Shout-outs to Alice Mwongeli! She was a super host," Kibara said. "She found me like a cube — or what do they call them on Main Campus? She found me like a hostel and found me a room. Within no time, I was already settled. I stayed here throughout the week until Thursday, before I joined the meeting with the Czech Embassy down the hall."
"Congratulations to Alice for being a super host," Kibara added. "She also won first round by majority. So, it's not by chance that I met her; she actually knows what she's doing."
That last line is Kibara's account of Mwongeli's win, in her own words, and is reported as such. The interview gives no further detail about the Czech Embassy meeting, and none is added here.
Kibara's sign-off was a promise to the people following the trip from Nairobi: "I will, I will, and I will send photos."
What we could not verify: the specific hotel name, dates and programme for the Coast trip; which faculty members are attending; whether the Reformation Africa executive team meeting Kibara heard about takes place; the Clerk race vote totals; the margin of Mwongeli's win beyond Kibara's account; and any detail of the Czech Embassy meeting Kibara mentions. Photos from the trip, when Kibara sends them, will be published with their own credits.
