This is the kind of youth story that is easy to miss in a week of politics: young Kenyans walked out of KICC on Thursday 30 October 2026 with certificates in their hands and a skill employers actually hire for.
Huawei Kenya trained and certified young people through its Cybersecurity Associate Training Course, with certificates presented at the closing ceremony of Cyberweek Africa 2026 at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre, Nairobi, on 30 October. The course covered network security, threat prevention, firewalls, encryption and decryption, and public key infrastructure, run with the Ministry of ICT and the Digital Economy and Huawei Technologies Kenya. Huawei Director for Policy and Partnerships Adam Lane attended.
Cyberweek Africa 2026 was the fifth edition of the event, themed "Cyber Threat Intelligence in the Age of AI", with more than 1,200 delegates from over 20 countries, convened by the Kenya School of Government and CyberPro Global. Youth Cyber Hackathon winners were also recognised, and the Nairobi Declaration on AI Governance was discussed. A second report said Huawei had visited more than 21 universities and TVETs, reaching tens of thousands of young people.
Why this matters to students is blunt: cybersecurity is not a motivational talk. It is a field where a certificate, plus hands-on practice, changes who gets called for an interview. The course here was certificated, delivered through a government–industry partnership, and tied to a continental event — not a flyer promising jobs. For a student in computing, IT, engineering or any course with a digital edge, this is the shape of opportunity to watch: short, certified, practical, and attached to an employer ecosystem.
What we could not verify: the exact number of young people certified in this cohort, the names of the hackathon winners, and the selection or application route for the next cohort were not in the sources checked. Those details will be added when Huawei or the ministry publishes them, not guessed. No fee or employment guarantee is claimed here.
