Two deadlines landed on the same Friday, and by Friday evening neither had produced the confirmation students were waiting for.
First, the lecturers' strike. The strike began on 2 October 2026, called by UASU, KUSU and KUDHEIHA across 35 public universities over the 2025–2029 collective bargaining agreement. On Wednesday 28 October, UASU Secretary-General Constantine Wasonga announced a verbal deal after about three hours of talks in a Nairobi hotel: a KSh 20 billion package for basic salaries and allowances. The union's demand had been KSh 98 billion, and earlier rejected government offers had risen through KSh 9.76 billion, KSh 11.95 billion and KSh 16 billion to KSh 20 billion during the talks. Wasonga's wording, reported by multiple outlets, was: "We have a deal on the financials. Tomorrow our technical team is going to sit down to put what we have agreed on on pen and paper." Technical teams were to meet on Thursday 29 October to document the figures. The formal signing and formal call-off were scheduled for Friday 30 October at 15:00, with lectures to resume on Monday 2 November if the signing happened.
As of searches run this afternoon, up to about 17:36 EAT, no source — Nation, Citizen Digital, People Daily, K24, The Standard, TUKO, KBC, Capital FM, Education News, or official UASU and ministry statements found — reports that the signing took place today, who signed, the exact wording of any signed document, or a formal call-off statement. A Nation editorial that says learning resumes on 2 November predates today's 15:00 signing time and does not itself report a signing having happened. Headlines from 28 October that say the strike "ended" describe the verbal agreement and the planned Friday signing, not a completed one. Until the terms are documented and the industrial action formally terminated, relief remains an expectation, not a settled fact.
Second, the road. Roads Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir promised on 9–10 September that the Rironi–Naivasha dualling would be complete and open by 30 October: "By October 30 this year, from Rironi to Naivasha, we will have completed the dualling, and people will be able to pass smoothly." The section is about 58–60 kilometres of four-lane dual carriageway, part of the wider 175-kilometre Rironi–Mau Summit project at KSh 183–184 billion. The conflicting timelines were already on record before today: the contractor, CRBC, pointed to December 2026 for tarmacking, the wider project was reported at about 35% overall in October, and a Treasury update showed Rironi–Naivasha early works at 34.96% complete as of 30 September 2026. On 29 October, Uzalendo News reported "a heavy silence" over the ministry's communication channels with hours remaining, and Getembe reported that motorists should not assume the whole stretch would become a fully operational dual carriageway immediately after the deadline unless the government confirmed otherwise.
As of the same afternoon searches, no official confirmation from KeNHA or the ministry, and no outlet report, says the road opened today, what section opened, or that a delay was announced. Do not read that as proof nothing happened on the ground — it is proof that nothing has been confirmed in the sources checked. A dated KeNHA or ministry statement, or a dated today photo of traffic on a named section, is what would settle it.
What students should take from today: do not pack, do not plan a Monday journey, and do not treat either deadline as met until a signed deal is published or an official road opening is announced. Campus Pulse will update both stories the moment either confirmation lands, and will say so plainly if the deadline passes without one.
What we could not verify: whether the 15:00 signing took place behind closed doors, whether any partial or "soft" road opening took place, and whether any official statement was issued after the last searches at about 17:36 EAT. A live check of UASU's and the Ministry of Education's X accounts, and of KeNHA's channels, is the next verification step.
