KETEH's 'Umebant' is the song running Kenya's charts this weekend. On Saturday morning it sat at No. 1 on Kenya's iTunes Top Songs, and it is No. 5 on the Shazam Top Songs chart for Kenya, up six places.
The track is the party record from 'Safari Ya Mapenzi', the debut album by KETEH, the six-member collective formed from Tusker's Base to Billboardz accelerator. The album dropped on Friday 6 November, the same night one of its voices, Chris Barr, sat down on NTV's Friday Night Rave — and gave Kenyatta University a shout-out on air.
Barr is one of the six artists behind the collective, alongside Muringi Matheri, Manasseh Shalom, Zawadi Mukami, Peter Njuguna and Ras Amor. The six were picked as finalists of Tusker's Base to Billboardz career accelerator, announced on 27 March 2026, from a shortlist of 30, and mentored by Bien under a six-month programme backed by Kenya Breweries Limited and Tusker.
Who is Chris Barr?
Christopher Lemere Barr, 29, is a Kenyan-Sudanese singer and songwriter whose sound is rooted in Arab and Swahili structure and built around his large vocal ability, according to the Daily Nation.
His journey into music began with song lyrics stuffed inside books. He finished third on the singing competition 'I Can Sing' in 2019, and abandoned weaving to pursue music full time.
He is best known for 'Hamu', his collaboration with Clark Keeng and Zawadi Mukami, which opens the five-track EP 'Musings', released on 14 May 2026. His other releases include 'Laiti' with Ally Fresh, released on 10 July 2026, and his single 'Like You'.
The Sandwich Podcast, which hosted him in November 2025, described him as "the future of RnB in Kenya".
Barr has spoken about how his songs start from feeling. "My major trigger in creation is a feeling. It could be from past experience, a memory of something I encountered, a sentiment, an observation — basically my entire knowledge bank of my lived experience," he told 15 Questions.
"I believe new ideas are really intersections of many different ideas and data points that collide and surface on the mind," he said in the same interview. "I like to envision lyrics as a different-edged paint brush just as like melody and the different aspects of production."
"Music is a language, as earlier mentioned, and it's a language I can speak fluently."
The song taking over
'Umebant' is KETEH's first single from the album. The single was released on 23 October 2026, and it is track eight of the 15 songs on 'Safari Ya Mapenzi'. It is the only track on the album produced by Vic West; the other 14 were produced by Kobby Worldwide.
In Sheng, 'umebant' means you have messed up — 'umechoma'.
The collective debuted the record live at Tusker Oktobafest at 1922 in Nyali, Mombasa, on Sunday 1 November, opening a night that also featured Ssaru and Wakadinali.
The numbers since then tell the story. Barr's own TikTok clip pushing the single, posted on Tuesday 3 November, had 461,400 plays, 94,900 likes, 1,640 comments, 3,671 shares and 5,010 saves by Saturday 7 November. On Spotify the song showed 9,084 plays on 7 November.
A KETEH singalong clip posted on 1 November, of the group singing the song around a table with the lyrics on screen, had 9,063 likes and 274 comments, with fans asking for the song title and where to stream it, and praising Zawadi Mukami's delivery. The on-screen lines fans are singing along to include "wine and cotch" and "material girl", over a celebration of a stylish Nairobi girl.

The NTV interview
Barr appeared on NTV Kenya's Friday Night Rave on Friday 6 November, hosted by Claudia Naisabwa and Brian Aseli. The show airs every Friday from 10pm to midnight.
On screen he was introduced as "CHRIS BARRS: FROM BASE TO BILLBOARDS — THE SINGER ON HIS MUSICAL JOURNEY & ROAD TO BIGGER STAGES". In the interview he told the story of moving from Mombasa to Nairobi, where he has lived since 2015, performing at hostels and small venues as a campus student carrying all his belongings, getting pickpocketed and robbed, and developing a tough "town personality" — learning, as he put it, why you cannot 'zuba' around town.
Barr also gave Kenyatta University a shout-out during the interview, a moment that has KU talking.

The NTV appearance capped a week of promotion for the album. Barr and Njuguna had also been guests on Radio Citizen FM's Mambo Mseto on Friday 30 October.

'Safari Ya Mapenzi' runs 15 tracks and 58 minutes: 'Salama', 'Mdogo Mdogo', 'Anything For You', 'Kena', 'Niruhusu', 'Sigalagala', 'Wikendi', 'Umebant', 'Twende Sana', 'Naumia', 'Sitoboi', 'Retired Lover Girl', 'Napepea', 'Naona Raha' and the title track 'Safari Ya Mapenzi'.

The collective held a listening party for it at the Tusker Micro Brewery on 24 August 2026, after the album had first been expected in late August.
