Technical training institutions from across Kenya have converged on Nyandarua County for the Kenya Association of Technical Training Institutions (KATTI) national ball games, which reached the semi-final stage on Saturday 7 November 2026.
The games bring together students to compete in football, netball, basketball and rugby, with categories for both men and women, alongside activities for students with special needs, Education News reports.
Rift Valley National Polytechnic's Queens have reached the women's football final, the institution confirmed on Saturday.
Nyandarua National Polytechnic is hosting the event under the leadership of its Chief Principal, Dr Jane Gitau, with KATTI coordinating the competition. Nine KATTI regions are taking part: Coast, Nairobi, Northern, South Rift, North Rift, Western, Lake, Mount Kenya East and Mount Kenya West.
Matches and other activities are taking place at Nyandarua National Polytechnic, AHITI, Kianjata, Oljororok, Nyahururu Stadium and Laikipia University grounds.
KATTI National Chairman for Sports and Recreation Idd Faraj issued a strong warning against recruiting outsiders, commonly known as "mamluki" or mercenary players, to represent institutions. Institutions found fielding non-students will face a three-year ban.
"Winning should never come at the expense of integrity. Institutions must respect the spirit of the competition and allow genuine students to represent their colleges," Faraj said.
Faraj also revealed plans to expand the competition beyond Kenya's borders through a proposed East African Technical Training Institutions Games, with consultations ongoing.
Technical and Vocational Education and Training Principal Secretary Dr Esther Muoria urged participants to view the competition as more than an opportunity to win medals and trophies. Her speech was read by Joyce Mwale from the department at the official opening.
"Sports are an important tool for shaping character. Students should embrace discipline, respect their opponents and demonstrate good sportsmanship both on and off the field," she said.
Muoria also urged colleges to give students with disabilities an equal chance in sports.
