A torrential storm has battered Wiser Girls Secondary School in Muhuru Bay, Nyatike Constituency, Migori County, tearing the roofs off classroom blocks that were being used as examination rooms for the ongoing KCSE examinations.

Principal Violet Singoei told Citizen Digital the storm struck this week, with heavy rains and very strong winds blowing off roofs and tearing down the school's perimeter wall.

"The incident happened this week, heavy rains accompanied by very strong winds blew off roofs and tore down the school perimeter wall. I thank God that not a single student was injured in the incident," Singoei said.

Four big classrooms meant to house up to 50 learners each were seriously damaged, with their roofs and walls torn apart, though they can still be repaired. The affected classrooms were being used by students as examination rooms for the ongoing KCSE exams, and the school has had to use alternative classrooms.

A dormitory was damaged when a tree fell on the building, while staff quarters, a guest facility and other structures suffered extensive damage. The school's solar panels, which support its water supply system, were blown away.

One candidate reportedly required medical attention after suffering shock, though no fatalities or physical injuries among learners were reported.

Government assessors, including the Deputy County Commissioner and education officials who visited the school, placed the preliminary loss at approximately Sh4 million. Singoei said the actual estimate for repairs could go above Sh4 million, noting that the Quantity Surveyor is yet to give the actual figures. She has issued an urgent plea for help.

Obolo SDA Church, located a short distance from the school, was also damaged in the storm.
