Moi University has introduced an electronic class-attendance monitoring system to track students' lecture attendance — and to catch the "ghost comrades" who appear active on paper without ever showing up to class.

The system has been rolled out first in the School of Education and the School of Information Sciences, where selected lecture halls have been fitted with devices that capture attendance automatically, according to Education News, which reported the story on 2 November 2026.

It replaces the manual registers lecturers have relied on for years. Under the old system, students could sign the register for absent colleagues — a practice the university says the new system will make impossible, because attendance is recorded by the device, not by a signature.

The university said it would hold an online induction to familiarise students with the system ahead of full rollout.

The report notes that questions remain about how the system will handle genuine absences — such as illness or family emergencies — and what happens when the equipment fails. Those details have not yet been explained publicly.

The move comes as universities across Kenya tighten up on attendance and academic integrity, and Moi's system is one of the most direct attempts yet to link lecture attendance to a student's record automatically.
