Reuben Ombura has taken the Speaker's chair of the 22nd Congress of the Kenyatta University Students Association (KUSA), and his first message to Congress is one of thanks — and a promise that the win will be met with humility.

"This victory belongs to every student who believes in progressive, inclusive governance," Ombura writes in a statement shared with Campus Pulse as a poster. "By placing their trust in me, Congress declared that leadership must be defined by competence, vision, and a proven track record."

He says Congress "rose above ethnic backgrounds, political affiliations, and social standings to unite behind a shared vision," and thanks the congresspeople who supported the journey: "We may have been silent, but we were the majority."

The statement does not name a vote count, a margin, or an opponent, and none is stated here. What it does name is the team around the Speaker. Ombura congratulates "our newly elected Deputy Speaker, Miss Alice Mwongeli, and Clerk, Mr. Edwin Auka, on their well-deserved wins," and says he looks forward to forming "a united House Business Committee (HBC) that delivers tangible results for students."

On how he intends to govern, Ombura writes that a win "is never validated by oppressing a competitor; true strength is shown by embracing diverse perspectives and extending a hand of partnership." He quotes Machiavelli on the measure of a leader lying "in using authority to foster stability, earn trust, and serve the common good," and says: "We will govern through shared purpose, not division. My political career embodies peace, unity, and inclusivity. To my competitor, I offer my sincere respect."

He closes with an adage — "We climb mountains not so the world can see us, but so we can see the world" — and a line that reads as both a definition of the office and a pledge: "This office is not a trophy for personal prestige, but a position to see and address the real needs of every comrade. It was competence and service that brought me to this seat, and it is unwavering competence and service delivery that I will offer."

"The campaign season is over, and the real work begins," he writes. "I invite every comrade to join us in building a stronger KUSA. My door remains open to your ideas and critique."

Context: the wider 22nd KUSA leadership was already in place before this statement. Elections concluded on 15 October 2026, the Vice-Chancellor's amended declaration of the elected Student Governing Council and Congress members was issued on 21 October 2026, and the 22nd Student Governing Council was inaugurated on 22 October 2026 under Vice-Chancellor Prof. John Okumu, chaired by Glen Karani Gikundi. The Speaker, Deputy Speaker and Clerk are Congress officers, a separate set of offices from the seven-member Student Governing Council executive named in that declaration. The poster does not state when the Congress officers were elected or when they take office, and that is not guessed here.

What we could not verify: the date of the Speaker's election, the vote count or margin, the name of Ombura's competitor, the full membership of the House Business Committee, and the date of the Congress's first sitting under the new Speaker. Those will be added when confirmed, not guessed.
