The University of Nairobi has directed students to clear outstanding fee balances and attend lectures without fail as teaching, examinations and research resumed after the lecturers' strike.

In a notice issued on Monday, 2 November 2026, Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs Prof. John D. Mande said normal learning and operations had resumed effective immediately.

"The University of Nairobi wishes to inform all students and staff that teaching, learning, examinations, research and other functions will resume on Monday, 2nd November, 2026. Students are requested to clear any pending fees and attend lectures without fail," the notice said, as reported by People Daily and Nairobi Leo.

Prof. Mande explained that the lecturers' strike came to an end after university staff unions agreed a return-to-work formula with the government.

"The Unions called the strike off and signed a Return-to-Work Formula (RTWF) with the government on Friday, 30 October, 2026," the notice said.

The strike, which began on 2 October, ended after the government and the Universities Academic Staff Union, the Kenya Universities Staff Union and the Kenya Union of Domestic, Hotels, Educational Institutions, Hospitals and Allied Workers signed the return-to-work formula on Friday, 30 October. The agreement provides a KSh 20 billion package towards implementing the 2025-2029 collective bargaining agreement, to be released in three instalments of KSh 6.7 billion, KSh 6.7 billion and KSh 6.6 billion.

The Ministry of Interior has urged university students across the country to return to their institutions and remain calm following the suspension of the strike. The University of Eldoret and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology also resumed teaching on Monday, 2 November, while Kibabii University resumed on Tuesday, 3 November.
