This is a restrained story, deliberately. A student has died, other students were injured, and a whole university was sent home. The facts below are what is confirmed in reporting of the university's own decision. Nothing graphic, no names of victims or families, and no speculation about who carried out the reported attack is included here.
On Tuesday, 6 October 2026, Kibabii University's Senate held a special meeting and resolved to suspend first-semester activities for the 2026/2027 academic year with immediate effect, following student unrest at the institution.
The university's own wording, as quoted in reporting of its statement and internal memo, was:
"The University Senate in its Special Meeting held today, Tuesday, 6th October 2026, resolved to suspend the 1st Semester 2026/2027 Academic Year activities following the student unrest with immediate effect."
What students were told to do
All students were directed to vacate the university premises immediately, by 3:00pm on Tuesday, 6 October — including students living in university hostels. Students living in the neighbourhood of the institution were advised to find alternative accommodation until teaching and learning activities resume.
No reopening date was announced in the decision as reported. That single fact is the one Kibabii students have been living with since: a semester suspended, not postponed by a week, with no date to plan around.
What happened before the closure
On Tuesday morning, Kibabii students took to the streets to protest after one of their fellow students died following a reported attack on Monday night. According to reports, four students were attacked near the university; one died and three others sustained injuries.
Students were protesting, in the terms reported, over their safety and demanding action over their colleague's death. Roads around the institution were disrupted, and police intervened to contain the protests.
Campus Pulse is not publishing further detail about the attack, the injuries, or the people involved. The circumstances of the reported attack remain, in the reporting available, a matter for investigation, and the identities of those involved have not been verified in a way that justifies naming anyone here.
Why this story is bigger than one campus
Kibabii's closure landed in the same week as the nationwide lecturers' strike that began on 2 October 2026, and in the same season in which other campuses have faced safety protests. It is a reminder that "campus life" is not only elections, sports and graduations. For many students, the most urgent campus issue is much simpler: whether the road home from campus, and the area around a hostel, is safe at night.
The questions Kibabii students are entitled to have answered — by the university and by the authorities investigating — are straightforward: what security measures will change before students return, what support is in place for injured students and for the bereaved, and when, precisely, will teaching resume? Until those answers are published by the university itself, Campus Pulse will not fill the gap with rumour.
Our thoughts are with the student's family, friends and classmates, and with the injured students. If you are a Kibabii student affected by this closure and you want to share, safely and anonymously, what support you actually need, Campus Pulse will listen — and will not publish your name or photograph without your explicit permission.
What we could not verify
A reopening date, the outcome of any investigation into the reported attack, and the current condition of the injured students were not confirmed in the verified sources used for this draft. The university's own further communications should be checked before any update claims a return date.
