Auditor-General Nancy Gathungu’s latest report (year ending 2024) is out — and it’s damning. Ten public universities spent Sh2.8 billion without a single supporting document. Another Sh268.99 million went on irregular allowances, mileage, and “acting” perks across 14 institutions. University of Nairobi alone had Sh1.78 billion in unsupported accommodation, catering and casual staff payments. Maasai Mara paid Sh26.2 million in irregular acting allowances. Kabianga leased land for Sh22.5 million without proper contracts.

The report calls it “a wasteful charge to public funds.”

Campus Pulse take: Bros and sis, while you’re queuing for missing marks forms and begging for fee extensions, some administrators are living large on “responsibility allowances” and unminuted council meetings. This is the same system that tells you “there’s no money” for hostels, electricity, WiFi or timely transcripts. Your fees and taxes are funding ghost expenditures while you sleep in 8-man rooms and eat once a day.

The Public Investments Committee is now pushing urgent reforms. But we’ve heard that before. Students deserve better governance — not more audits that gather dust.

Share this if your campus has ever felt the pain of “no funds” while the top spends like there’s no tomorrow.
